Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP, Colorado (Day 8)

June 1st
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is not as popular as all of the rest. However, this is what made us want to visit it even more! This park is located in Colorado so on the night of May 31st we made the 3 hour drive from Moab, Utah to Montrose, Colorado!

When we finally arrived at the park it was already dark outside so we had no idea what the park looked like. But when we woke up we were in for a wonderful surprise.

View from Warner Point

This park is like nothing that we have ever seen before! Since we only had one day in the park we decided to do a short hike out to Warner Point. This hike led us to an amazing view of the canyon and shows just how steep, deep, and narrow it really is.

The size and scale of this imposing canyon is hard to believe and these pictures do not do it justice. On average, the walls of this canyon are 2,000 feet deep and although it isn’t as huge as other famous canyons, the verticality of Black Canyon will surely make you weak in the knees.

Another shocking feature about this park is that the canyon literally comes out of nowhere. The previous photo kind of shows how there is rolling hills all around it but you would never know that it is there until you drive up close. This park was really shocking and cool to experience and we are glad that we made time for it in our trip.

Aaaaaaand, of course, we couldn’t end the day without a little bit of drama…. because there is a reason why we do not have many photos of this park.
When we got back to the car from this hike the car would not start. Gustavo’s there trying to turn the key and all we get is a couple clicks but nothing. He gets out the jump starter, and after trying like 5 times the car finally starts! (We find out later that it was totally luck, and you’ll read why)

We hop in the car and we really don’t know what the heck just happened so we’re totally nervous to stop anywhere else in the park because who knows if it will start again. So, we decide to just drive to town, about 30 minutes away, and pick up some things we need. (Really, I just wanted to be in town in case we got stuck again)

And guess what? We stop at a store, come out, and the car won’t start AGAIN. And this time the jump starter isn’t doing anything. Luckily, the repair shop is literally 2 blocks away. After trying to push the car by ourselves and not even making it out of the parking lot, we eventually get the accumulated help of like 10 different people, between helping us push the car to getting pulled by another car the rest of the way, we eventually make it to the shop (Thanks guys!! Because we def couldn’t have done it alone)

Then here comes the funny part. And Gustavo even called it, because as soon as the repair man turns the key the car starts PERFECTLY FINE!!! Bahahahahahahahaah!

Come to find out, all it was is a loose screw on the battery cable. All the repair man did was get a screw driver, turn it like 4 times, and that was it….. We spent a good 3 hours trying to get 2 blocks for a loose screw.

FUNNIEST THING EVER!!!!

After all of this happened, the day was already coming to an end and a storm had rolled in so we gave up on any other hikes. We ended the day with a lovely dinner at a local restaurant and found a KOA that had Wi-Fi so we could watch Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
“Ju live & Ju learn.” –Tavo D. Because this will always be a funny story to remember.

And if you’re counting, this is week #2 and breakdown #2.
However, we’re headed to the Rockies next! So stay tuned!

Peace & Love,
Espe & Tavo
